Mud Day: June 26
Looking for something to do this weekend?!
Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center in Dowell (Solomons), Maryland, is hosting its second annual Mud Day on Sunday, June 26 from Noon to 4pm.
Sound counter-intuitive to let your child roll around in the mud for a few hours? It’s actually quite healthy!
MUD MAKES YOU HAPPY – New research has shown that exposure to friendly soil bacteria (Mycobacterium Vaccae) stimulates the immune system causing the brain to release serotonin, the endorphin used to regulate mood.
MUD REDUCES YOUR SUSCEPTIBILITY TO DEPRESSION – Given the link of the friendly bacteria in mud and its ability to make you happy, scientists say that regular exposure to mud will reduce a child’s vulnerability to depression.
MUD REDUCES ALLERGIES & ASTHMA SYMPTOMS – There is increasing evidence that today’s society is “too clean”, and that this is a contributor to increased levels of childhood illnesses, including immune disorders and allergies.
International Mud Day celebrates the joy of childhood, nature, and our deep connection to the earth. Join us for this family-friendly event where families are encouraged to stomp, splash and get dirty! The event will feature giant mud play areas like the Mega Mud Pit, and the Mini Mud Pit for the little ones. Visit the Mud Kitchen to make mud pies, and then stop in the Mud Café where you can make a seed cake to take home. Give the trees at Annmarie Garden some personality with a Squish-a-Face Forest Friend, using clay, mud and natural materials to make faces on the trees. Create a Terrific Terrarium to take home to remind you of the wonderful mud-a-licious day you spent at Annmarie! Light snacks will be available for purchase, including Kona Ice of Calvert County and Calvert Kettle Corn.
Dress for a mess, bring a change of clothes, a beach towel, and lawn chairs, and join us. Bug spray and sunscreen are encouraged. A rinse off station will be available, but be prepared for a wet ride home. And remember, the most memorable days end with the dirtiest clothes. No pets, smoking or vaping at this family-oriented event. The event is made possible in part by Thomas L. Hance Inc., Chesapeake’s Bounty and Wentworth Nursery. Admission is free for members; $5 per person; free for children 4 & under. For more information, visit www.annmariegarden.org or call 410-326-4640.
